Koi no Takinobori
(A Carp Swimming up the Rapids)
Imagining the water pouring from a wooden bucket as a waterfall, I portrayed carp climbing the waterfall on her back. During the Edo period (1603-1867), this popular tattoo motif was believed to bring good fortune, because of the resemblance of the carp scales to koban - oval-shaped gold coins.
